Submitted: January 27, 2003

Dalhousie Industrial Engineering senior year students Gareth Gill, Kimberly Hamilton, Andrew MacDonald and Nick Malone placed first in the Engineering Design competition at 2003 Canadian Society of Industrial Engineering (CSIE) student conference. The conference was held January 23-26, and hosted by the University of Windsor. This year's competition was sponsored by Quality Safety Systems, a manufacturer of automotive seat belts in Tecumseh, Ontario, with more than 700 employees ( a subsidiary of Tokai Rica of Japan -
see http://www.tokai-rika.co.jp/en/company/kaigai/main.html ). The teams were asked to look at a particular work cell in that company and redesign the cell to reduce production cycle times, to decrease the variability of production cycle times and to increase flexibility of the products it can manufacture. The teams had a limited amount of time to visit the site, study the problem, and develop and present their solutions. For more information, see the conference website (http://www.csie2003.org) or the Engineering Design Competition page (http://www.csie2003.org/competitions.html). Second place went to the team from the University of Toronto, and third place was won by Ecole Polytechnique.
